The South Island of New Zealand (Te Waipounamu) is widely regarded as one of the world's premier road trip destinations. With soaring Southern Alps peaks, turquoise glacial lakes, and dense rainforests dropping straight into fiords, driving a campervan gives you total freedom to experience Aotearoa at your own pace.

Days 1–3: Christchurch to Lake Tekapo & Aoraki / Mount Cook

Begin your journey in Christchurch, picking up your self-contained vehicle. Drive across the flat Canterbury Plains before ascending into the Mackenzie Basin. Your first night stop at Lake Tekapo offers brilliant turquoise waters and world-renowned stargazing within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve.

On Day 2, continue along Lake Pukaki to Mount Cook Village. We strongly recommend hiking the Hooker Valley Track (approx. 3 hours return), crossing three suspension bridges to reach Hooker Lake with floating icebergs against the backdrop of New Zealand's tallest peak.

After soaking in Queenstown's dining scene, head south toward Te Anau—the gateway to Fiordland National Park. Dedicate an entire day to driving the Milford Road (State Highway 94). Plan for stops at Eglinton Valley, Mirror Lakes, and the Homer Tunnel before arriving at Milford Sound for a boat cruise among vertical granite walls and towering waterfalls.

Days 8–11: The Wild West Coast & Glaciers

Depart Te Anau and travel back north through the Haast Pass onto the rugged West Coast. This section of Highway 6 cuts through ancient temperate rainforests bordering the Tasman Sea. Stop at Franz Josef Glacier or Fox Glacier to view the ice rivers descending toward sea level.
