New Zealand's 10 official Great Walks represent the gold standard of multi-day alpine trekking. Maintained by the Department of Conservation (DOC), these tracks take hikers through pristine national parks, rainforests, and mountain passes.

Top 3 South Island Tracks Compared

  • Milford Track (4 Days / 53 km): World-famous, featuring Mackinnon Pass and Sutherland Falls. Strict direction control and high permit demand.
  • Routeburn Track (3 Days / 33 km): High alpine meadows, towering peaks, and crystal tarns connecting Mount Aspiring and Fiordland National Parks.
  • Kepler Track (3–4 Days / 60 km): Purpose-built loop track starting near Te Anau, offering panoramic ridge-line walking.

How the DOC Booking System Works

Hut and campsite bookings for the summer season (October to April) generally launch in mid-May. Due to extreme international demand, Milford and Routeburn track huts frequently sell out within 15–30 minutes of opening.

Tips for securing your spot:

  1. Create your DOC account weeks before booking launch day.
  2. Have backup dates and flexible directional choices ready.
  3. Consider shoulder season (October or April) for higher availability.
"Safety Note: Alpine weather in Fiordland can change from clear sky to freezing downpours within 30 minutes. Always carry waterproof layers, emergency locator beacons (PLBs), and warm merino wool clothing regardless of forecast."
